ehaSeveral of our researchers from the Centre for Haemato-Oncology attended the European Haematology Association’s annual meeting in Vienna last week, keeping up a record of attendance and high quality presentations.

Professor John Gribben gave a Plenary Session presentation (pictured), and Professor Jude Fitzgibbon chaired the session titled “Oncogenic mechanisms and novel targets in non-Hodgkin's lymphoma”.

Jessica Okosun gave an oral presentation at the presidential symposium, which scored in the top five of 1700 abstracts submitted. The title was "Recurrent mTORC1-activating RRAGC mutations in follicular lymphoma" – a collaborative project with David Sabatini's lab at the Whitehead Institute, MIT. Further details about Jessica's collaborative research can be found at Lymphoma Hub.

Kiran Tawana also had an abstract accepted but, as she is writing up her PhD thesis, it was presented by Csaba Bödör - a former postdoctoral researcher from the group. The presentation was titled “Convergence Of Somatic Mutations Within The Jak-Stat Signalling Pathway In A Novel Runx1-Mutated Pedigree”.

Other Centre delegates included Lola Koniali who presented a poster, and James Heward, Shamzah Araf and Ahad Al Seraihi.

Fabienne McClanahan attended as an inaugural member of the EHA Early Career Advisory Group. At the EHA congress in Stockholm two years ago, researchers met to discuss the need for an official representation of early career scientists and clinicians in Europe. They formed a steering group and clear aims. They are now fully recognised within the EHA society and endorsed as an independent EHA committee.

This group was set up to represent the voice of young haematologists and advises all departments of the EHA on topics of particular interest to young hematologists and junior members. At the conference, they hosted several events relevant for early career attendees, both scientific and social.

Fabienne said,

“Our aims and mission are to strengthen EHA initiatives outreaching to young people in hematology; to support and attract them to hematology and the EHA”

We are also glad to announce that Professor Gribben has joined the Governing Board of the EHA. He said:

“I will join as one of the Councillors and this is indeed a great personal honour for me to join such an august body.

“I hope to build on further collaborations between Barts Cancer Institute and our European colleagues.

“The EHA offers great opportunities to Researchers for grant funding and training programs and I hope our Centre will continue to avail itself of these opportunities.”
